Employees at the SkyCity casino are being forced to wear flea collars to keep from being bitten while working.
Workers have complained about infestations on the casino floor for years, the New Zealand Herald reports.
But despite regular cleaning of the carpet and gaming machines, the problem remains.
Unite Union national director Mike Treen said workers had been complaining to SkyCity management, as well as the union, for years.
He said though many had resorted to wearing flea collars, workers were also provided with cans of flea repellent so they could spray themselves before starting work.
Treen said the problem was that the management was unwilling to shut down the floor for enough time to have the carpets cleaned properly as they would lose too much money.
"It's just about a 24-hour, seven-day business. They don't want to close the casino down even for a day."
The infestation issue was first flagged in 2007 when SkyCity management had a pest management programme put in place to deal with the fleas.
A SkyCity spokeswoman told media that "most large carpeted buildings that are frequented by the public encounter some degree of an issue with biting insects".
"We have thorough, proactive pest control measures in place and are confident that we are providing a safe and healthy facility for our staff and customers," she said.
