Let me just start this off by saying that the desk that I have now is a proper P.O.S.

Long story short someone has offered me a 5' long work bench like-a-dis (not quite as nice a build but it's got powdered steel adjustable legs, stringer bars, standard accessory spots ) and I am seriously considering using this thing as a new desk. It's a huge work surface, it's got a lot of options for attachments (pedestal mount for PC, strong enough to hold multiple monitor arms, option to mount a sweet pullout keyboard tray) and I really can't beat the price.

However there's a little voice that makes me hesitate. On the one hand it's just a bit too...industrial to fit in comfortably in my apartment. On the other hand it could potentially be not only the sturdiest piece of furniture I've ever owned but the most functional as well. It will also work/look great in an eventual workshop.

So I put the question to you ATOT. Am I crazy for wanting to use a workbench as a computer desk?

Looks nice, I'm picking up a 24" wide screen CRT tomorrow and I know my desk won't even come close to supporting the weight. One you linked to looks like it would hold up the monitor.

if you manage to ever pick up a human female at least you know your computer desk will support her weight while poking her repeatedly.

Go for it, will stand up to any type of monitor or equipment you can put on it.

These kinds of questions are stupid, why even ask them? You know what's best for you. If you were asking for an opinion on whether or not these were good desks/workbenches that'd be different. Make your own decision.

Yeah not a bad idea at all, especially if you use a monitor swing arm that clamps on the desk for a multi-monitor setup. The desks at OfficeMax etc. are sometimes a little too flimsy to do things like that; with a good workbench you can put anything you want on it.

I actually was looking into a desk like this, of course it's a little beyond my pricerange and it won't fit in my apartment right now but next place I move to I'm definitely putting it in there:
Kendall Howard 72" performance workstation

My computer 'desk' is an old lab table from a Pharmaceutical company. I like it a lot because it's about 4" taller than a normal desk, and very strong. It was well used when I got it, so it looks like warmed over hell... but that's what tablecloths are for. ;)

Too industrial? Problem solved.

It looks like a great desk, especially if you can eventually use it in a shop. Buy it.

No such thing as overkill for a desk...
Best desk is desk that offers most usefull space in the given amount of space, while being sturdy...

The first question you need to ask yourself is whether or not you've ever gotten laid......

The second question is whether this new desk might stand in the way of a positive answer to question 1 ever becoming a reality. If you think it will not interfere, its sturdiness may come in handy.... **boW-ChicKa-woW** ;)

Desks NOT made of particle board are hard to find without paying a lot of cash.

They still make CRT's?? A 24" CRT is gonna weigh over 100lbs LOL
