Workaround for Win 98 SE Reinstall ?

I have an ASUS A7V with Athlon 1Ghz , 128 MB Memory , ATX Midi case 300 W and 4 yrs old ,Win '98 SE . Things were going OK . I installed Sybot and let it clear according to it's recommendations and all this trouble appeared . Couldn't get Norton antivirus or Internet Security to come up properly . Could open my 750 kbps ADSL line , but can't succesfully use any program ( Explorer . Email , downloader ) to access the Internet . Get message like no line open etc etc . Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Communications section from Win 98 Setup CD . No help . Tried removing and reinstalling the NIC and router software - no help . This PC has 2 bootable separate Win 98 Op systems on the same drive ( 2 separate logical drives with System Commander ) . The second one continues to work OK ( didn't do Sybot there ) . Is there any way to remedy this situation without having to reinstall Win 98 from scratch on the disk ?

Thanks for the replies . Yes Sybot , search and destroy . Tried the recovery - it didn't help or work properly either , I think . How do I ping the router and google ? Tried reinstalling Win '98 on top of itself - did not help .

Try http://www.schadentech.com/Malware/spyware.htm to find LSPfix. This is for win98se systems and below that lose internet after malware removal.

There is a sticky in the Software-Apps Forum for malware that has excellent advice, and leads you to the above site.

Perhaps residue of malware remains and a complete removal process is required(malware often interferes with Antivirus or other corrective programs). This would include CWS, Adaware, and spybot as explained at the above site in detail.

Thanks xgsound , the LSPFIX.exe program did fix the problem . Couldn't find it in that link , but did with a google search .

I see he now uses Winsock2fix for win9x , but as you can see they both work. I guess it's time to refresh my print out and Malware cd.

I go to his site before heading out to fix friends machines to see what's new with the Malware issues.

It's guys like him that make AT the place to check first for computer problems.
