workaround for minimum 64mb memory win 2k setup?

I just tried to install win 2k on a box with only 32 mbs of ram, and it said it needs at least 64 mb. is there a way to work around this? i basically plan to install win 2k and leave the box alone.

Do winnt32 /? I believe there is a command line switch to skip the system requirements check.

Or buy 32MB of ram. Its fairly cheap and will help the OS run instead of just thrash your (probably slow) hard drive constantly.

well the only problem is this computer was made by hp a while ago, and the pci and isa ports are extended above the motherboard, so i cant get to any of the dimm slots.

Sounds like my old crappy Dell. Trying to reach in there with BIG hands isnt fun, so I took everything out 🙂

It'll be interesting if it works...but why? It'll take an eternity just to boot to the desktop!

There's another question of just how much memory Win2K has marked as unpagable, but then again WinNT used to recommend 12MB for x86 machines if I remember right :Q ...When did MS stop compiling for RISC processors?

NT was the last version of Windows that ran on other architectures. Its a damn shame too since x86 sucks 😛

I installed 2k off the CD on a Compaq 133mhz 32MB lapp with no switches? I did have to use some switch to install Me on the same lappy though.

I installed xp pro on a gateway laptop 233mhz and 224mb ram. Had to do clean install as I could not install over win2k 🙂

Win2k on 32MB of RAM! It's going to be really slow and possibly unstable. I'd go to crucial.com and get a single 128MB DIMM to just replace the 32 DIMM. It shouldn't cost you more than $60 or so.

Yea theres a workaround....go buy some more ram you d.a.!!come on do you really think the "workaround" would be worth it?let me guess your gonna make this pc a server for doom 2!!!

ha
ha

Ps-next youll want a "workaround" for playiong Q3 on a 1meg trident video card!!what a d.a.!!

I wouldn't recommend doing this, I've done it a few times in the past, win2k is not stable... I had alot of lost delayed-write data errors in the system log, and on some boots I couldn't even open notepad.

It just isn't stable.

Hell, W2k should allow you to install with 32Mb RAM. At least I don't remember doing anything special when I installed it into 486 with 32Mb RAM. BTW, good and stable OS must be stable even with very limited hardware resources, IMO...
