I'm spec'ing out a new Workstation to use at work and I wanted to get a few opinions.
I'm a Network admin/Database admin/programmer so I do a lot of work in Visual Studio 97/2005, SQL QA/Management Studio.. I regularly have 10-15 firefox windows open with 10-15 tabs in each. I run MS Office 2003 and usually have Excel,Access and Outlook open with Word on occasion. I always have UltraEdit open with about 10-15 scripts I'm working on as well as a slew of other administrative utilities (ADUC, Ideal Admin, GPEDIT, Exchange System Mgr, etc)
I have to go through a vendor to have the system built so it will be supported, but I'm spec'ing the whole thing out first myself. This is all going to be running stock.
I'm going with a Supermicro C2SBC-Q mb and Supermicro CSE-733TQ-465B case. My vendor gets a good price on both and I like the Sata hot swap option.
I'm considering either an e8500 or a Q6600/9300. It looks like the e8500 is the better performer in Worldbench tests, so I'm leaning that way unless someone has a compelling argument to go quad.
I run Dual 22" ws monitors so I'm thinking a 8800gt 512 meg will handle that without any issues. That's what I have in my gaming rig at home and I have no complaints.
I'm thinking of getting a couple wd 640's and running them in raid 0. I just want good responsiveness and I think that's the best bang for the buck. The other option is a single velociraptor, but that's $100 extra for half the space. Are there any comparisons to a velociraptor vs 2 640's in raid 0? I haven't found any. Also is the ICH9DO a decent raid controller? I don't have any experience with it.
I'm a bit undecided on the RAM, obviously I'm going with ddr2/800 but it's hard to find any reviews for the fastest ram that doesn't involve any overclocking. I just want the best timings at stock speeds. I've already found out that my vendor can't get OCZ which is my choice for RAM. Edge, Crucial, Kingston and simple are all available though.
any input is greatly appreciated..
