Work VS. School Clubs/Activities

OK, I'm a junior in high school. This year, I decided to get a bit more involved in school clubs, etc, because I had only done them sparsely before and thought it would be a good experience (you're only in high school once) and a great way to meet people. I've always done all sorts of music activites, but that was about it (pretty one-dimensional).

Anyway, so at the beginning of this year I got accepted to Student Council and Key Club (Key Club=service organization). Combining these with my music, school, and homework, pretty much ate up all my time. So other than playing gigs and teaching some piano lessons, I haven't had a "regular job" this year.

The elections for Student Council for next year just happened, and to my dismay I didn't get in for next year. :( This may just be sour grapes, but their election process is kind of bullshit. I mean, the essays/apps I wrote for the advisors were fine and good, thus they put me on the ballot. But then the student body votes for the new members from that ballot. Since they have nothing else to go on, people vote for their friends, and as such the most popular people fill the slots right up.

In the meantime, I've decided I don't want to do Key Club again next year even though I was accepted again for them next year--I'm all for community service, etc, but the people in the club kind of piss me off.

The more pressing issue now is work. I'm going to get a steady, full-time job this summer (if I can get one, my friends aren't having much luck getting hired). That's sort of a "regardless" thing. But, come next fall, I'll be faced with a desicion: do I keep the job and go to part-time, or do I quit the job and join more clubs? Student Council has a thing where you can get accepted late (2nd Quarter), which is what I did this year, and the girl who heads that up all but told me that if I do that next year she'll get me in. (She wanted me in the group, was even more disappoitned than I was that I didn't make it). You just have to jump through hoops to do it.

Oh well, consider this a disorganized attempt at organizing my thoughts. As the title implies, I'm debating whether to keep working through next school year and lighten up on the activities, or vice versa.

And before anyone says "just do both", there simply aren't enough hours in the day. School = 8 hrs, + music = 3-4 hours, clubs are a couple hours, work is a few hours. Doing that everyday would seriously be impossible. Besides, no place would hire me if I can't come to work all the time because of activities.

Student Council isn't a joke, half of what we do is service projects to the community. I don't see raising money for med research or collecting food and toys for disadvantaged families at christmas to be "useless."

Interesting....just saw the list of who actually made it in today. More proof of it being a popularity contest. 2 people who were in it this year are in it again next year. The rest of us got booted, and have been replaced by cheerleaders, drill team members, other athletes, etc.

what's up with this "permission to join" crap? i was president of my HS's key club and its supposed to be an open door policy. only discretion of joining or not is if you pay your dues on time to become an "international member."

my advice would be to stick with the extra-currics. just for college purposes, unless your financial condition is such that you "must" (emphasis on quotation marks) work to support your family- then working outweighs extra currics for college apps.

best of both words...focus more on community service and do part-time. i was big with extra-currics, but there was no way in hell id do student council. buncha popular idiots.

The Key Club and other service clubs at my highschool had these ricockilous tryouts and interview process. Of the 120 that "tried out" for key, about 25 made it in.

yea i do live in socal...LA to be exact.

try outs/interview process is complete crap for key club. that's absurd! what is their reasoning for this? to see who can best pick up trash? see who is most efficient at passing out water at a local marathon? gather the fastest tray distributers? WTF. only remotely logical explaination is that they're afraid of people joining just to put it on their app and bail later on. to FOSTER DEDICATION and to INCREASE MEMBERSHIP are parts of their job in the first place. incompetent fools...120members would be nice to brag about. plus its contradiction of the whole service and friendship idea and is most probably a violation of the key club bylaws. where do you live? do you know what division your club is in? might be able to stir the pot some...

My school has over 5000 students, if everyone were allowed into everything we would have ridiculous numbers in these clubs, nothing could ever get done.

and mine has over 4000 spread over three tracks. that's how you determine who has the real leadership abilities. besides, its not a one man show...you have a cabinet to help you.
