Work study?

I need to go talk to the people at my school about it, but in the meantime, I'm curious. If you do work study:

how much $ do you make?
what kind of hours?
what do you do?
how do you like it?
work study vs. flipping burgers?

When I was in college I landed a programmer's position for one of the departments. It was great: free schedule; walk 1 level up - my office. Walk 1 level down - lecture halls. Pay was twice as much compared to an average work study (dusting library books, etc)

As far as I remember you can't work more than 20 hrs per week. I never even got close to that many hours - studying was hella hard and took a lot of time.

Choosing between work study and flipping burgers - work study no contest. Work on campus, get paid fairly well, learn smth new, too.

paulney, how far into your degree were you when you landed that position? I'm just starting my first semester. (I took two classes this summer, but whatever)

I was a transfer, so it was going to be my junior year. But I don't think they cared. I was a webmaster and also generated reports using db script language they used. They asked for a portfolio and a resume, so I sent them my personal site (pretty lame at that time) and my resume. And I got the position.

Work study pay depends on the job, but its supposed to max out at $12. You can make more, but the govt only allows the school to give you $12/ hr max from work study funds. Usually the jobs are around $8-$12/hr.

Hours are usually flexible - I set my own hours based around my clsas schedule

There are a lot of different work-study jobs, like swiping cards at the gym, developing websites, etc. Basically any department can create a job and say they want a work study student for it.

I started out doing basic tech support and then eventually migrated to doing database and web development. Other students in my office do admin stuff and planning for events.

Its a pretty good job since it pays well and is so convenient. Plus flexible hours are good in case I need extra time to study.

Mine paid $15.75/hr, and it was not the limit. There was another job req for a software engineer position, but it required some serious C skills, which I did not have at the time. It paid almost $20/hr

That was at UCB.

But I guess the only thing that counts is what I find out when I go in and ask. 😉

oh, and it's a community college in Iowa, so I'm guessing anything technology-related will be pretty lame. But who knows.

Oh yeah, and another thing: because my pay was pretty high, you can imagine, my work study funds ran out fairly quickly. But the head of the dept was so impressed with the quality of the job I did, they applied for extra funding and transferred me to a part time position. I kept it for 2 years until I graduated.

That's not what I meant. I am pretty sure that the most the govt subsidizes (the entire point of work-study) is 12/hr. If you get paid more, like yours did and mine does, the department you work for covers the extra.

I teach/tutor at a local school for 15/hr through Work Study. Gotta love the surrounding schools of UCR. 😀

That's the work-study job I had. Take advantage of it! You can get tons of school work done while getting paid. Many work-study jobs involve work. The one you have, you'll probably be working a few minutes out of every hour. Use the rest of your time to get your class work done. Yes, it's low-paying, but if your work-study job is like mine was, you can get most of your school work done while being paid, and that frees up time to take another part-time job somewhere else if you want.

I did work study before for two years. They worked around my class schedule, so I could come in for a while, go to class, then come back in. There was a limit to how many hours a week I could work though. I don't remember how much I got paid for it.
