Lenovo T400 running WIN XP that was fine up until this Monday. It either blue screens (and sometimes shows a STOP code) or it just freezes entirely. I can't go more than a couple hours without this happening. Nothing was knowingly installed since I can even remember on this machine. I tried System Restore but it keeps saying it can't restore (tried multiple days). Disk Defrag doesn't reveal a problem. Norton AV same. WhoCrashed shows nothing in its history. Task Manager doesn't show anything fishy. I ran malwarebytes and it found 2 entries:
Registry Data Items Infected:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\StartMenuLogoff (PUM.Hijack.StartMenu) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotify (PUM.Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0)
So I got rid of those and it's still freezing up. Is this the sign of a dying laptop with hardware failure? Is this why laptops only have a few years' shelf life? Temps seem normal at 38C max (and I can hear the exhaust fan).
