I think its just talk. So many people in this world are mean, take advantage of others and look for the easy way out. If they do it right they are much more successful than those that work hard and are nice. Although, I'm sure someone somewhere got ahead with that motto's strategy, I personally just think its random talk.

I think a more accurate quote would be "Work hard for what you want while avoiding all other work, and be nice to the RIGHT people while not giving anyone else the time of day".

Edit: "with that you can accomplish anything but making everyone like you".

I thought it was - "work hard and be nice to people and don't get out of line and some day you will get to retire in Florida". Always seemed like a sham to me.

That's because no one said it.
someone did.

google search harder.

If it was on google, you would have found it.
well yeh, who wouldn't? it's not like it takes Einstein to use that search engine.... like here. :disgust:

i think i found who said it, but then it was a guy who made inspirational posters out of the saying so i'm not sure if he originated it.

Work hard, be nice to people, and odds are you'll die poor unless you're one of us, the few hundred million wealthiest people in the world.

i think people who word hard and are nice to people are people who are looked up to.

Accomplishing anything and being looked up to are two different things. And I think they are probably looked up to by people in less fortunate positions than them, thats probably all.

you don't think their peers would look up to them? sure they would or maybe just their peers who also work hard and are nice to people.

why would you have to die poor? you think Ebenezer Scrooge would've been less wealthy had he been nice to people? I can see being nice bringing more wealth. Just because you are nice doesn't mean you have to squander your savings.

There's a point there somewhere, but I do look up to people who are in less fortunate positions than me yet maintain their integrity. I certainly don't think many of them could accomplish anything though. Chances are the people who do historically great things have to step on many heads to get into the position to do them. Being universally liked is sadly not the best way to accomplish anything usually.

My boss in an asshole and sits in his office all day, take some of his favorite employees out to lunch and is only nice to them.

He seems to accomplish nothing but he's still the boss.

You're wrong mosh. You gain more from doing the exact opposite in this country.

Temporarily. In the end, you've not just hurt other people, you've hurt yourself.

If you follow mosh's statement, the advantages might not be obvious upfront, but many people in society benefit, which causes a chain reaction that gets back to you later in life (or, your children's lives, and their children's children's lives, etc.).
