Back in the day when links actually were worth something, designing porn websites was a good living. Nowadays, it can still be profitable, but its not as easy.
 
If you're good enough, some kind of consulting business run out of a home office. This requires not only the skill you're selling (web design, coding, chartered accountancy, etc.) but also sales and business management skills. Plus seed money to cover initial expenses and to live on while you're building a client list.

Pretty much everything advertised as a home business is a scam.

how does one go about finding these medical transciption jobs? i have some friends who are unemployed and this sure could help them out.
 
I know EDS has a variety of jobs that can be done from home, although I think they're easier to get if you start out working in an office to show reliability. A friend of mine did this, and when she moved for her husband's job she was able to switch over to working from home doing the same job for the same salary.

go cold calling on doctors offices or talk to every doctor you know asking if they need transcription services.

 
My mom does medical transcription, but she works at a hospital.

I used to make nice money doing freelance graphic work, but it came and went in bunches. Sometimes I'd have a great month, some months I wouldn't make a penny. Now I do graphics as a real job.

Not so simple. They don't generally hire people like that, they hire transcription companies who have alot of people working for them.
 
I have wondered this too. All those work from home ads bring you to a site that says send x amount of money and we will teach you the basics of a home business.

The one thing you need is a strong typing skill for the job to be profitable as well as a vast vocabulary of medical terminology. Whether or not you know what it means is irrelevant as long as you spell it correctly. I got mine right at the end of school. Brought home all the reports from some required typing class averaging 120+ WPM. Had a doctor over that ninght with the papers I was suppose to clean up laying out. "Say, how would like a job?"

Caught a doctor up who was behind 5 months to just day to day tapes in about 6 or 7 months. He absolutely hated writing. That's about how I got mine anyway.

You could call around though. I didn't get good at until a few months. So many new words.
