So my mom is 65 has Parkinsons. Sometime monday morning she slipped in the shower and hurt her hip. I found this out while I was at work Monday morning midday. I work for a small company and I told my boss that I will probably have to fly down to my parents to help, Because my dad is recovering from cancer and needs help. And she may require some type of hip surgery. This is all I knew monday morning. I am the only developer. Wednesday afternoon my dad called me and told me that he bought an airline ticket for me for Thursday afternoon, my mom would be having a surgery on Friday.

I left my boss a cell phone message since he was out of the office. I told people.

I told them I would have my laptop and be able to do work. WOW what a mistake...now I am being asked if I am going to be available 9-5. What if the system goes down....I understand that they are worried...but come on. Right now I really don't care about work all that much.

Tough situation. There is a Family Medical Leave Act that you might be able to file under. It protects you from missing a certain amount of time to help immediate family in emergency situations without fear of losing your job, but you don't get paid for the time you take off. I think my wife's parents used that to take care of their mother recently.

Wish your family well and hope your mother and father make full recoveries.

but they don't have to pay you while on leave under the FMLA , so that is only going to work if you don't need money. and if you don't need money, then just quit if they give you a hard time

good luck Liviathan :sun:

Good advise, I am using it now.
You do get paid if you use your sick/vacation time.

You have to let your boss know that he can not depend on you as much.
He has no choice but to accept it.

Make sure to get a note from her doctor saying that she needs in home care.

Well I have no problem working from home when I'm with my parents. But the part that bothers me is the nagging. I understand that I do some critical work, but cut me some slack. And to be honest I am not afraid of my loosing my job. The last 2 years have been pretty rough for me. Got laidoff in june 2003, worked on and off since...finally got full time employment in November but things have not worked out as I planned....so it maybe a point to find a new job soon anyway.

You may want to see if "Hospice" operates in their area.
Also the council for the aging may have some programs that could be helpfull.
In my area volunteers will "Just check on" older folks for you everyday
Or deliver "Meals on wheels" to older folk

Our parents take care of us in the beginning.
As the end nears, we need to take care of them.

Let your boss know things are changing.
He can't do anything about it.
