Barack Obama:

High-speed wireless is how we’ll spark new innovation, new investments, and new jobs, connecting every corner of America to the digital age.

So is Obama finally coming out of his shell and making sense?

Is he talking about subsidies to mobile service providers to provide 3G or 4G service in rural areas?

Verizon 3G coverage seems to be good in the backwater places where my (extended) family lives, yet T-Mobile had no service in my uncle's subdivision near Orlando, FL...

And the road construction projects that don't serve to boost the economy in any meaningful way?

And the mandatory healthcare that people can't afford?

... the list goes on. Political rhetoric at its finest.

I wonder what the critics said when Mr Eisenhower proposed the Interstate highway system?

To me this sounds like a worthwhile investment like the interstate highway system was and is.

Yes, being able to quickly move troops from anywhere in the nation to anywhere else in the nation is about on par with giving a handful of people living in the boondocks access to high-quality subsidized porn.

Honestly, I don't even think the president thinks through stuff anymore before he says it.

Spending freeze! The Deficit is a real problem!

Highspeed rails! Internet for everyone! Damn the cost! Investment in the future!

Since he couldn't do anything else right, I guess he figured he may as well try something that might possibly work, with assloads of my tax dollars.

Fuckhead.

4G I think. Verizon's 3G coverage is already pretty ridiculous, in terms of landmass covered I think their 3G is available in like 85% of the US. In terms of customers covered it's probably well into the 90th percentile, because the coverage gaps are probably in very sparsely populated areas. Between 3G, satellite internet, other regional wireless providers, etc. I think it's pretty safe to say that nearly all Americans can already get wireless internet. Might not be very fast, but most is decent, I can get like 1.0-1.5Mbps down with my 3G connection, and I've seen 2.0Mbps+ on good days. I think if you choose to live in the middle of nowhere, though, you just kind of have to accept that you're not going to get very high speed internet at a low price. But Verizon and other are starting to roll out 4G (this was happening without the White House's recent initiative, although I'm sure in a couple years when 4G coverage has increased they will point to it and say "hey, look at what we did!"), which should provide a nice boost in speed. But the data caps can be pretty restrictive if you're using it as your primary connection.

He has no idea how much that will cost. Idiotic bafoon. Spend, spend, spend!

"Bafoon???"

You are so stupid you don't even realize how stupid you are, and everything you THINK you know is wrong. All your posts are like a dog responding to Pavlov's bell - you read something about Obama, and then an utterly predictable, mindless, repetitive, talking-points post is ejected from your rectum.

You are a boring, droning nincompoop.

Bahahaha I don't normally see his posts since put on ignore list.

I see the posts have gotten more anti-American as ever. Wow.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but the whole rural broadband thing he was talking about is satellite. He's already subsidizing so it's the equivalent price as 3G in areas where you can't get 3G.

My neighbors get their monthly subsidizing, even though I have 3G that works perfectly well. Yet another well run government handout.

A single payer healthcare system would do more to spark innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit than broadband ever could.

Hitler loved the rail system in Germany, he used it every day. (just adding my 2 cents to the dumb talk for no reason but another chance to knock Hitler)

And roads? Who needs stinking roads. Just buy bigger tires.
Internet? Who needs the stinking internet. Oops. (never mind)

Look at a T-mobile coverage map. Unless you live in an urban area or next to an Interstate, it sucks.

What happened to all the green jobs?

Theres no such thing. Humans are like a more successful version of a virus. Our whole mission in life is to swallow up resources and make babies. ALL economies, whether free marker or government run, are designed to facilitate this way of life. In order to be green we would have to stop producing products (because they all generate pollution one way or another) and just live on farms, working for ourselves.

That will never happen, cuz we love our cars and TV's and interwebs too damn much.

One problem with wireless for public use, is that in many locations this is being blocked using legal action by service providers who want to be paid for their service. Some municipalities would like to offer free internet wireless service, but they just dont wat to deal with the lawsuits. The Idiot FCC could step in and make this possible, however, they are busy protecting the assets of telephone and ISP companies.

So find a network that covers you. That's the beauty of competition.

I just so easy insn't it. I live 18 miles as a crow flies from Seattle. Yet, even though I have the provider with the best coverage in the area, I still have to stand in just the right place to be able to talk on my cell phone.

Get you head out of the sand, and deal with reality not ideology.

I fail to see how this is not a good idea. Internet IS the new highway system, and if everyone has access anywhere anytime the commerce that would generate will out weight the cost.
