Word starts SLOW but Excel starts FAST

With a modest-size document, maybe 4 pages, Word 97 (SR-1) takes about 45 seconds to start and be ready for editing. In contrast, Excel takes 3 seconds to start with a very big spreadsheet. (In both cases I start by clicking on the document name.) I have a 266 Mhz Pentium3 and run Win 98. Until recently Word started up normally fast (a few seconds). I don't recall what changes I have made "recently" that might have caused this, but it could be going from Win95 to 98.

A 266MHz Pentium 3?? You might also want to check for macro viruses in Word.

Is your fonts folder overloaded? Maybe Word has to load up heaps of them and that's what slows it down. Try trashing some of those dumb "symbol" fonts (you know, the picture ones) and trash the other ones you don't need.

If there are a large number of fonts, Excel would be subject to the slow down as well as Word. In Win9x and WinNT/2K, fonts are not application specific and most of them actually load up during the startup.
