i've been trying out a lot of riddles like these lately, and frankly, I've seen very few that actually work under all conditions. Most have some flaw like this.
To best work them out, you just have think about what the riddler wants and just go with it.

For example, think about the sphinx one:

What goes on four legs in the morning, on two legs at noon, and on three legs in the evening?

technically morning, noon, and evening would implies times of day, not times of its life, but that's not how you're supposed to interpret it. I guess you could start off with that interpretation, but once you cant find an answer, you move on from it.
