Word on the Dual Athlon MPx chipset

This might be old news but it is new to me:

Check out this link to Aces Hardware.
It has news on the Dual Athlon MPx southbridge. It has some
new features like 66mhz 64bit PCI slots, Hardware Raid (0,1,0+1)
and it can use 4 NON-Registered DDR slots. It also says it
boards should be cheaper than those with the regular Athlon MP chipset.

To put that clear - the new chipset in reality is only a new 768 southbridge, the 762 north bridge remains unchanged.

Since the 64-bit PCI bus hangs off the north bridge - hence the 768 doesn't "support" the PCI bus, it's a participant like any other PCI card). Same for the RAM array, there are no technical changes here.

Nonetheless, the 768 improves things. For one, the 768 is a 66-MHz-capable PCI chip, meaning that the primary PCI bus (the one generated in 762) remains at 66 MHz instead of being kicked back to 33 by the old 766 south.

Then, the 768 also acts as a PCI-to-PCI bridge onto a secondary 32-bit 33 MHz PCI bus.

So, boards with the 760MPX can have up to two 66 MHz/64-bit slots plus as many 33 MHz/32-bit slots as necessary - or, more 33 MHz/64-bit slots plus a few 32-bitty ones.

regards, Peter

What most people seem to not realise is that the 760MPX won't be a higher performing solution than the 760MP. The 66MHz/64-bit capability is mainly for high end servers.

The use of non registered memory is sweeeeeet. now i can go ahead and buy the 512 DDR i wanted to buy and not worry about using it later when i do go dual.

question tho, anyone think it will be possible to adjust multiplier/voltage/bus on the up and coming dual mobos? if i can overclock, i'd be happy running at 3 ghz. 🙂
