It was featured in the hit song "Bound for the Floor" by the band Local H in 1996.

It's a good word. Definitely out of favor/underused these days.

I've always been a fan of "Protean."

I try to pepper that into as many of my conversations as I can, just for the extra-special douchey effect.

I hear it quite a bit on conference calls. Makes me want to break pencils.

Word of the decade, or maybe half decade, should be "literally." I literally want to delete that word from English language.

Proselytize (from google - define proselytize) -
convert or attempt to convert (someone) from one religion, belief, or opinion to another. "the program did have a tremendous evangelical effect, proselytizing many"

I used it today. Was on a call using my cellphone and she said I'm right behind you. I didn't think she meant that literally, but when I turned and saw her I said, "you meant that literally." Is there something wrong with that?

Highly erroneous example from Google. The word is synonymous with preaching. One would not say " preaching many ". One proselytizes a belief.

Well, preaching would be included in the 'convert or attempt to convert' part. But I think in the past it tended to imply success.

This is why I have a sort of love/hate relationship with google's "define" function. While they probably have their finger on the pulse of common usage moreso than say Merriam-Webster, common usage isn't necessarily correct. For example, here is their definition - you can see it's not quite so wishy washy.

intransitive verb

1: to induce someone to convert to one's faith
2: to recruit someone to join one's party, institution, or cause
edit - I do however believe that this is one of those words that will eventually follow common usage.
