That's one giant reptile. The pterosaur Quetzalcoatlus is depicted in this artist's illustration.

With a massive wingspan nearing 40 feet (12 meters), the pterosaur Quetzalcoatlus is the largest known airborne animal to have lived upon our planet.

Cool. And you thought the Flintstones were kidding when they'd have one of these come down and pick up one of the characters.

The name comes from the Aztec feathered serpent, Quetzalcoatl. The serpent is linked to Tonantzin, an Aztec and pre-Aztec mother goddess, who may have been transmongrified and subsumed into the persona of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Today is the feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe so Quetzalcoatlus is a good choice for word of the day. Now we need to photoshop the Virgin flying on the back of a Quetzalcoatlus.
