word line spacing

I'm helping someone with word and they're having this really odd issue that I've never seen before. When a line is typed and enter is pressed, instead of going right below using normal line spacing, it goes right at the bottom of the page. If entered is pressed again, then that line goes in the center, and the new line at the end. It's like if its trying to stretch the document to fill in the whole page. Anyone ever see this before and know what causes it? I checked the line spacing options and all looks fine, its same as my ms word, and I don't have that issue.
