Word hungapp please help!

I just came from Microsoft.com I searched their ENTIRE site for "Word +hungapp" and got:

Sorry, no results were found.

Right I'm the only user in the world who has ever had Word crash on them. 😉

Anyway, here is the system:
Sony Vaio GRV550
P4 2.4 Ghz
30GB HD
Ati 7500C 32 MB
Windows XP Home
Don't have the Bios and other info handy, sorry.

The program is Word 2002 (10.2627.2625)

If you start the program from double-clicking/opening a file, it works. But if you try to "File -> Open" or "File -> Save" or "File -> Save as" the program hangs. If you use task manager, Word doesn't even recognize that it is hung, until you try to end it and then it prompts for a report error to Microsoft with "Word, hungapp, etc..." This was apparently a progressive bug that finally got worse and worse and now happens all the time.

I have uninstalled/re-installed the program, reset the registry, re-installed mdac.inc and I have no idea what else to try.

Norton reports no viruses.

Anyone out there with a fix?

Did you apply the latest office service packs?

You got no results from your search because "hungapp" is not recognized as a word. Try again, using hung app or hangs.

Ah I didn't realize that using Microsoft's own error codes could not be recognized by Microsoft support. 😉

Found out some more. Only in word does the dialog pop-up window for accessing files (open, save or save as) does not appear. It does in all other (including office) applications.

Very strange, I guess formatting the drive will have to be done.

These problems did not occur until after all the latest service packs were installed. I'm thinking they had something to do with it. Can't system restore though. It does not work.

Guess reformat is in order.

did you already end up reformatting?

i know that word sometimes hangs when it is trying to access a network resource that is not available.

this would particularly address the issue of when you're going to file | save as or file | open, etc. because it's looking through the local network for whatever resource you may have previously saved to, etc.

perhaps if you check the activity of the svchost in the task manager (when it's hanging) there may be some useful information in there.

also, ask around and see if anyone knows how to manually edit the first location that word "defaults" to when using those file options.
