Word freezing when trying to open files from a Network

I am having problems with a users machine. she is running windows 2000 and office 2000, with all the latest service packs. the problem is when she tries to open a file from one of her mapped drives word just hangs. if she browses to the file through explorer then it works. if she tries to save to this network drive that also works fine. i have tried a detect and repair but this has not helped. the one thing i have noticed is that thier is over 300 folders in the root of this drive..

Any help would be greatly appreciated..
