Well, ok, maybe not 7 years but opening a .doc file with word takes ~ 45-75 seconds, for each file.

Just reinstalled Word, no luck.

IBM T41 1.6ghz, 768mb ram

Any ideas?

Norton Antivirus, Systemworks, or Internet security? If so disable the office plugin.

Kaspersky AV... I'll check if it has anything

Kaspersky is good about letting you right click the tray icon > pause protection > choose w/e you want

If disabling Kaspersky doesn;t have an effect on the docs, boot to safe mode and see if they open quickly. If so then go back to normal mode and pull up msconfig and have fun trying to figure out which one is the culprit.

sounds like your normal template is bloated.....find the normal.dot and rename it and see if that helps

Ok, tried disabling Kaspersky. Still Slow.
Renamed normal.dot and let word create a new one. Still slow.

In Safe mode, the documents load very quick ...
Startup items seems normal, anything else i could try?

No embedded items, happens on all files. I can open word just fine and quick, it just happens when i open a document.

Acrobat Professional isn't installed.

And i just noticed a new thing, once i wait the time and the document is loaded, if i downsize the window, then bring it back up, its frozen and dosent seem to ever "wake up"

🙁

Thanks for all the responses so far..!

try to .old a file called normal.dot It ussually somewhere under the user profile in docs and settings.

What's the size of the file you are opening? Where is it located - hard drive or network share? Does it have links to other documents?

It happens on every file i open 🙁

If it's good in safe mode and not normal mode that tells you that one of the non-microsoft services or startup items is most likely the culprit. Run MSCONFIG and disable the "load startup items" and reboot. Is everything ok now?
