I'm no expert.

I'm not sure you can customize the actual ribbon. I see word underline as an option for that quick access toolbar of course. Why aren't you going with that option? Tell the quick access toolbar to display below the ribbon perhaps? Ctrl-F1 will make it stand out even more.

Of course a double click on the word followed by a Ctrl-U does the trick as well.

The whole point of the ribbon is that you don't do this. All the commands are available for you and are not hidden behind menus. Think about it. If you removed a button from the ribbon, where would it go? THere would be no way for you to access that functionality.

For your particular example (underline), you probably shouldn't be using the ribbon anyway. Use the mini-menu that pops up when you've hilighted something. Much less distance to travel with your mouse

And lastly, if you want access to frequently used commands, you can pin those on the "Quick Access Toolbar" which is in the title bar (has Save, Undo, Redo, by default).

You can't try and squeeze your old work paradigm into the new ribbon. Try using it the way it was intended to be used. I am already navigating much, much faster than with the old menu system.
