Word 2000 File->Save & Save button disabled

I'm having a problem with Word 2000 SR-3. The Save/Save As options in the file menu are grayed out, as well as the New, Open, and Save buttons in the standard toolbar. I can open files from the File menu and can save them with hotkeys or when I exit Word, but the disabled buttons are a real inconvenience. Any suggestions? TIA!
