woot!

I believe it's hacker language (you know l33t and all that silly stuff) w00t means 'root', like when hackers would get a root of hacking into something. I'm not an uber nerd as I would not know all about this stuff, but that's what someone told me when I asked.

Woot originated as a hacker term for root (or administrative) access to a computer. However, with the term as coincides with the gamer term, "w00t".

"w00t" was originally an trunicated expression common among players of Dungeons and Dragons tabletop role-playing game for "Wow, loot!" Thus the term passed into the net-culture where it thrived in video game communities and lost its original meaning and is used simply as a term of excitement.

"I defeated the dark sorcerer! Woot!"

"woot! i r teh flagmastar!" (Think Tribes)

"Woot, I pwnzed this dude's boxen!'

hmm well being i used to be a "hacker" in 80/90s before i became the opposite of a hacker, an admin, of all the strange/stupid/ignorant "l33t" language i've used and seen used, w00t was _never_ used to refer to root.

r3wt, r00t, etc etc, but never w00t

w00t as i have always understood it, is like saying "yay" or "wohoo", it's an exclamation of excitement

way to go for the most unrelated thread in the general hardware forum that i've seen in my short existence on anandtech.com forums

As a gamer I can definetly say that w00t is used a ton by gamers. Not sure it started there, but its definetly commonplace there. The above examples were good one "I defeated the sorceror - w00t!".

leet or l33t is also gamer language as far as I know. In some of the first online games that had player rankings, you would start at 1337. 1337 --> l33t (pronounced leet) and if you called someone l33t it usually meant that they were a noob/rookie.
