BOOYAH!!!!!! Smoke on that GM and Ford :D Maybe my dad will now replace his '97 Ford F-150 :p

So here's the scoop on the 1500 HEMI . . . as previously reported (several times) it will become available in January of 2003 as a mid year model. The Buzz is that it will be initially offered in the 4x4 Off-Road (see below) then it will show up in other Ram 1500 configurations. You'll notice that the HEMI is not mentioned in the official 2003 Ram 1500 information posted below. This is because it is a mid year model and won't be officially announced until January (at the NAIAS).

Hrm, they should drop the "Magnum" from the model and just call it the HEMI :)

That's strange......a local dealership had a truck parked outside and they said it had the new Hemi engine in it.

Ummm, YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Big truck + more power = ALWAYS GOOD :D

Besides, the current RAM is woefully underpowered with the 4.7 liter Magnum V8 and the 5.9 liter Magnum sucks gas like a drunk in an ABC store

Right now all I see is an overweight work truck with a classic name slapped on the side. Where are the hp/tq numbers that propell this monstrosity?

For years I wanted a Ram based SUV, & when I first saw pics of the Durango I thought I'd finally gotten one.

Then I found out it was Dakota based.

I like the xterra, its just too underpowered and small to be a truly effective SUV.

Even though I drive one, I don't really like truck-based SUV's. I'd much rather have a pure-bred, like a Land-Rover.

I agree that it is underpowered (for towing, etc.), but it is a truly effective SUV.

How is the Ram 1500 overweight?? The 5.7 liter Hemi will be standard in the 2500/3500 models which are the heavy-duty chassis trucks. Putting the 5.7 liter Hemi in the 1500 as an option will make it the most powerful half-ton pickup on the planet.

As for numbers, the 5.7 liter Hemi spits out 345HP and 375 lb-ft of twist, better numbers than any of the competition. The only gas engine that outpowers the 5.7 liter Hemi is the hugely massive 8.1 liter 340 HP / 455 lb-ft V8 only available in the 2500 HD / 3500 Silverados

technically that engine doesn't outpower the hemi.

Yes it does, by a wide margin. When it come to truck engines, torque is more important than horsepower. Torque IS the end-all be-all when it comes to trucks.

But even so, you can only get the 8.1 in the heavy duty GM trucks. The Hemi will be available in the 1500 RAM. The next powerful engine would be Chevy's 300 HP / 360 lb-ft 6.0 liter V8.

He's right. Power is defined by force multiplied by a time interval. Hence, since the Hemi has more horsepower than the huge block Chevy motor, it is in fact more powerful. Yes it has less torque. That's not what he said. And I won't argue with you that torque is where the buck stops when it comes to truck motors, you're quite right on that. It just gets confused when technical terms (like "power" in this case) are misused.
