Woot! My first car! Update!

I'll be getting it today or tomorrow. A Mustang's been my dream car since I was 12. I'm buying a used one from an individual seller later today. It's a blue 2001 Mustang Coupe with the smaller 3.8L V6 engine and 66,700 miles - $7000. It looks spotless inside and out, and I found many receipts for oil changes in the glove compartment.

I know, some people hate Mustangs but for me it's the only affordable sports car and I really like the way they look. Insurance is affordable at $100/month (I'm only 21!) and I'll only have to pay $300/month for 2 years to pay it off completely.

I'll post pics as soon as I can.

UPDATE: Change of plans. The blue one I was gonna get seems to be tied up now, there may or may not be someone else buying it so we said forget it. Instead I got a silver 2001 with 55,600 miles and a few more options for $8700.

One question: It has a light on the dashboard that says 'theft' that flashes red every few seconds when the car's off. I know it's an anti-theft system but what is it called?

UPDATE:

Called the dealer about the airbag light being on and they had me schedule an appointment with the Ford dealer to have it fixed. They're paying it all.

I drove it to work and back yesterday. Wow. It's extremely fun to drive, and much smoother and solid than anything else I've ever driven.

my first car was a 1977 Plymouth Volare' station wagon with a slant6 and auto. 🙁

That was back in 1986.

congratulations!!!!!

<---- i  Mustangs

I know it's heavy, I could easily tell while test driving it. But it also has pretty insane pickup if you push it. I'm used to driving a 2002 Stratus SXT 4-door which has 150 HP V4 and it has some power, but nothing compared to this. I think it's 195HP.

A V4 Mustang would be horrible and be an insult to the Mustang name IMHO.

It's not the most economical choice for a college student, I know a Civic or something in the same price range might last me a little longer, maybe be more reliable, but for $7K @ 66.7K miles, it's a good value anyway. I intend to keep it for 2-3 years and by then probably I'll start a family or something and get a sedan of some kind. I want a fun ride for the next few years.

congrats. check out stangnet for all sorts of stuff to do to our car. just because it's a V6 doesn't mean it has to stay slow

I4, not V4. Sheesh, have you guys ever even looked under the hood of a car?

Congrats to the OP. I hope it turns out to be reliable for you, there were some issues with the V6 cars for a while.

V4... 4 cylinder... Ok it's not normally called that, I don't even know what the V in V6/V8 means, but you know what I'm saying 😉 Anyway it would end up being about 150HP or so and that's just sad.

My insurance will be cheap because my parents have a really good insurance agency that they've used for 15 years and we've only had like 1 small claim in that time. None of us including my brother and parents have gotten a speeding ticket in the last 25+ years, so we're pretty low risk people.

The V is the alignment of the pistons isnt it? All 4 cylinders are aligned in a straight row or "Inline"

Btw nice car OP. 🙂

That makes sense. I guess a Mustang 4-cylinder would be inline though so it would be an I4.

I'm not totally clueless about cars, my dad and I have replaced innumerable spark plugs, changed oil, tires, replaced 2 water pumps, timing belts, valve stems and seals, master cylinders, brakes, air filters, etc. We never could afford to have someone else do the work for us so we did it ourselves. now we don't have time to do it so we pay up.

My best memory is using a air compressor to plug into one of the spark plug sockets to hold the valve stems up while we replaced the valve seals. While we were replacing the last seal the power in the neighborhood went out. power goes out maybe once a year, and usually in the winter. This was mid-summer and there were no storms or anything going on. We had to hurry to finish it before we lost pressure and the stem would fall into the engine and be lost until we completely disassembled the thing to get it out.
