FYI these things have EXTREMELY aggressive beater bars. The reason they 'suck up' so much more 'dirt' is that the 'dirt' is actually carpet fibers being ripped up which makes you think it actually has better suction.

If you have cheap carpet it will take about 4-5 years of vacuuming before you end up with bare spots.

No joke.. Next time you empty your canister take a close look at the contents. I had one of the earlier yellow models, DC07 I think, and it ended up destroying my apartment carpet after a few years. Granted I claimed it as 'normal wear and tear' but gave the thing away when I bought a home. I replaced it with the Eureka Boss (or whatever it's called, the consumer reports recommended one) and LOVE it. It filters much much better and hepa filter bags are dirt cheap on amazon.

A vacuum is nothing more than an air pump with a giant filter (whether it's a bag or a cartridge or whatever). Look at the dyson "filters".. most of the dust is just being pushed through the foam and dumped back into your house.

A hepa bag will filter much better and allow more airflow.. Just sayin..

... I will add that the build quality of the dyson is imo superior to my eureka. The eureka has flimsy handle latches, a stupid cord holder, and is loud. Everything else is awesome.

Welcome to heaven. Welcome to pure vacuuming bliss. Welcome to the joy of Dyson.

What? The joy of over priced marketing?

The Dyson has been shown to NOT be the best vacuum over and over.

Dyson = apple of vacuum world.

Are you working for a vacuum company? I saw you post the exact same thing in another thread a while ago.

No, it pissed off Krozy when I posted in his first thread, then he dissed me in his second. I believe this is his 3rd or 4th thread about his vacuum I've run across so I'm gonna be sure to post my opinion (since he values it so much)

anything to back this up? links? studies? comparisons?

There are (or were) vacuum forums where the overwhelming consensus is that people buy dyson for the marketing and that's it. It's a good vacuum and decent product but (in my opinion) has a couple of major design flaws - way too stiff beater bars and craptastic filtering (to name a few)

What is the non-Dyson equivalent?

Some have answered this below but even a basic goodle search brings up...

"Consumer Reports tested thirty-two upright vacuums including the Dyson DC07 Animal. What place did the Dyson come in at? Thirteen, behind models from Hoover, Eureka, Kenmore, Kirby and Oreck; models generally cheaper than the DC07’s $620 US price tag."

Not really sure. Personally I ended up giving away my DV07 and buying a Eureka boss (consumer reports #1 vacuum). The overall design doesn't look as well thought out and there are a couple of niggling complaints (cord wrap, power button, handle tilt release) but it filters very very well which is what I wanted.

If you're interested in the best air filtration possible then a Dyson will not cut it. Search froze's other dyson threads where I've typed it all out, but basically the Dyson uses these tiny little foam filters which flow fine (i.e. good suction) but dust/dirt tends to get pumped back into your home.

A 'bagged' vacuum uses the bag itself as a huge hepa filter, some (my eureka included) have a separate post hepa cartridge as well.
