Went to the ham & turkey party tonight down to the firehall & won a pretty nice Kabar hunting knife. :)

For you city folk who don't know what a ham & turkey party is - it's a party to support the local fire department. They have a lot of hams and turkeys (hence the name) and strip steaks & shrimp & lobster tails that they raffle off. They walk around and sell tickets for $1 for each drawing (actually, a spinning of a wheel); either a 1/60 chance or 1/120 chance each time. $2 for a cup when you arrive, and no matter how I tried, the firemen kept that cup at least half full of beer, nonstop. Plus, lots of snacks to snack on during the festivities. In addition to meat, they have door prizes, and a few nice prizes donated by local businesses (Kabar is local.) I won on the 2nd drawing after I arrived; I was pretty happy for the rest of the night. :)

Sadly though, when they were raffling off the bacon... in the smiling, living, happy, cute phase of bacon, I didn't win. :(

I think I saw this shit on TV.. raffling off meat as a fundraiser. I believe it was on Anthony Bourdain in Midwest or somewhere rural like your western NY.

It's nice that you got to win something that you can use to carve all the ham that you got there.

My elderly neighbor recently showed me his knife collection from when he was in the marines in WWII. He had two "blue blades", a stiletto and a machete from when he was fighting in the pacific.

I work on his PC when it has problems. He's in his nineties.

I got roped into the Cutco sales a while ago, dried up when my source pool ran out. But the upside was a little-known secret that the same company owns KA-BAR, and employees get 50% off. Got myself one of these. Great knife.

^^Same here, breakfast meal support events are what's common in this area.

With the glass-filled nylon sheath, $40ish including all the shipping & tax. That was in 2004 so prices have gone up a bit since then.

I've had one of these since about 1999. Good work knife...cuts through 2-3 inch nylon lines easily, yet still works good for a steak knife at the barge BBQ on Friday.

See, I didn't have to bother taking a picture! It was awesome for cutting pepperoni for lunch in the woods this afternoon. It was like a hot knife going through butter.
