"It is my pleasure to inform you that you have been selected as a WPI Marshall/Chavez/Means Scholarship recipient." This Scholarship recognizes the academic achievmetns and leadership skills of African Americn, Latino, and American Indian students. Even though, racially I'm caucasian, being born in Brazil apperently makes me Hispanic. Woot!

Edit:

Forgot to add. The scholarship is for $72,000 or 18k/year out of the 42k/year tuition. So hopefully with finacial aid and all I wont be paying much.

wow they're going to be disappointed when they see you and notice that you look white 😛 i guess thats one of those minority scholarships (as long as you last name isnt lee, chang, chen, wang, wong)

Congrats I suppose, but alot of people have very ill feelings towards these type of scholarships, myself included. Though congrats 🙂

Ride that minority status into grad school baby. Whatever, as long as you perform up to par there's no shame in it.

Brazil... hispanic... Brazil... hispanic... 😕

Dunno, I just put down that I was born in Brazil. They made the decision to give me the scholarship.

They probably thought you were latino, not hispanic. 🙂 Hispanic = comes from Spanish speaking country (including Spain, so you can be caucasian and hispanic). Latino = comes from Latin American country, which includes Portuguese-speaking countries like Brazil. 🙂

(Brazilians aren't hispanic, that's what I was getting at)

I had a friend who's Jewish (and rich as a fvck) but born in Argentina and he got full ride to college because of that.

The scholarship isn't for Hispanics, it's for "African-American, Latino and American Indian students".

Yep, they reserve the right to allow whoever they want in/ do buisness with whoever they want.

That's part of the right of having a private buisness, you can tell them to get the fvck out if you don't like their shirt. Same as doing it at your house. If you own it, it's yours, and you don't have to let anyone else be a part of it if you don't want.

They MIGHT come back and try to sue, but there isn't much legal standing IIRC.

Well then, the only catagory that I'm able to fit into then is Latino. So being born in Brazil makes me Latino.

Yes, there definately is legal standing, it is illegal to deny service to a specific group or race, meaning discrimination. If the plantiff can show proof of a patttern of actions then the case is pretty much over. There was a something back in the 60's called the Civil Rights movement, I do hope you have heard of it.

it depends on how "public" your private business/institution is... it's illegal for say, Denny's to discriminate against blacks because it's very open to the public. a private college would obviously be less open to the public than a restaurant.
