I cancelled my order on the 5900U, woke up sober the next day and couldn't see going through the work of replacing my 9800Pro with a card so commonplace.

This card intrigues me though: OTES3 system is quiet, copper heat sinks on all with rear exhaust for fan. The 5800 is the most infamous card in history, and this is the only one with 1GHz rated RAM that is quiet. If the Doom 3 previews hold true, this card will run it faster than my 9800 Pro. ( and I care more about Doom3 than any game this year)

Beyond that, I'll buy a nV40 or R420 anyway, so I'm not really out anything except playing with my 9800Pro on my main computer till the novelty of the 5800 wears off. (then my son will probably get it to accelerate his Sponge Bob and Sinbad experiences)

You are only kidding yourself if you expect doom3 to be out before the fall... perhaps even before 2005. This damn game has been delayed soo much that I have almost stopped caring. Besides by the time its out there will be way better video cards on the market for the same price. Is doom 3 the only reason you are trading down to this model from a 9800 pro?

What can you folks not understand about this? He bought the card to play with it. To check it out. To see what there is to see. To give it to his son eventually as an upgrade from his Ti4200. I want it when hes done with it just for the sake of having it. Its a hard to find card. And maybe some ATI'er pissed him off and hes doing this to spite them. Its his perogitive to do what he wants as it is anyones as long as it doesn't effect others. RMA'ing a blown card due to mods for an example. If I wanted to buy a Volari card just to check it out, so what? No doubt other cards perform better, but thats not the point is it.

That may be the case, but Doom 3 is not my primary reason for getting this card.

The card I buy to really play Doom3 and DX9 games will cost double (or more) this price.

Is doom 3 the only reason you are trading down to this model from a 9800 pro?
No, to summarize the above posts, my reasons in order of personal importance:
1. I like to try out new video cards, and I've already promised a client I would sell him the 9800Pro for $150 by the end of June
2. I've always wanted to try a 5800Ultra, and I'm betting this will run at Ultra speeds due to costly cooling solution Abit put on it and 1Ghz RAM
3. Definite "cool hardware" factor to this card
4. It's an upgrade, albeit unnecessary, to my 4 year old's computer

Don't any of you naysayers ever just like to try out different hardware? In the more carefree "DINK" days I used to change video cards monthly, just to check them out and play with them. Are you telling me the WHOLE satisfaction of buying a card is running games at the highest, best settings fastest? Sheesh. If that were the case I'd just buy the fastest card available once a year and be done with it.

I fish in some bass tournaments also. I can only use one rod at a time, but I have ten. I like to canoe,I can only use one canoe at a time, but I have 2. I can only shoot one shotgun at ducks, but I have two due to selling the third a while back. I know guys with 20-30 guns. Don't you ever just buy hobby equipment for the fun of it?

You're mostly right Keys, but I'm not pissed at any ATIdiots. Somewhat bewildered at times why they seem to feel the need to put down nVidia users over things like DX9 performance and a little better AA, but not spiteful.

You hit the nail on the head with "play with it", you know where I'm coming from.

We don't live in Soviet Russia where we buy one card to last till it rusts, da? ;)

I've got to admit, the copper heatsinks look pretty sweet. And oxidation should turn them into a dignified green rather than a rusty red. ;)

Hehe yeah I know what you mean when you say its fun to try out new equipment. I was just curious why you bought the card and hadn't really read the other posts... actually I hadn't really heard much about the fx5800 but as for the satisfaction with games thing... I don't see any purpose for buying new video cards other than being able to run games at high settings, but to each their own I suppose. Though with the framerate differences between the two cards I suppose it doesn't really matter that much with the current games that are out.

Schweet! We are now an army of 2 Rollo  Of course mine is the true leaf blower but that's why I have headphones :) Besides don't want to damage my soon to be 4yr old's delicate hearing while fragging stuff. Checkout the UT2k3 demo scores I managed with the 5800U not too shaby for a card everyone makes fun of eh? I get near 6200 3Dmock '03, 19000 '01, 53fps in AQ3, avg. 40+fps in FarCry with 4xAA/AF@10x7, run Halo silky smooth@10x7, ect. ect. I suppose the concept of not having to squirrel away cash and miser it out on the absolute best bang-for-buck hardware is a foriegn one to starving college students and HS'ers but having a card that's still fast but that doesn't show up in every goober on the web's sig is kind of nice isn't it? They can bash all they want but I've been known to drop $200 on a meal so it's all relative ain't it! ;)

Interesting, I believe those were some of the same reasons why people wanted to buy a voodoo5 6k, which you seemed to think was foolish ;)

I guess it is different though, in that a voodoo won't even play today's games and this will.

Way to go, Rollo. Don't listen to those who question your wisdom in buying the card you want. Shoot, I've owned about 25 different PCI video cards over the last two years with my AGP-less Dell, the total cost of which could, most likely, have built me a killer system. You wouldn't believe the number of folks that tried to talk down to me because I refused to buy a motherboard w/AGP. Shoot, if I had had the cash, I would've loved to play around with one of those $600 PCI Parhelias.

It's only now that I'm getting the parts to build my own system with an AGP slot, and because I want to, not because others think I should.

Half the voodoo5's out there don't work, or work to a limited extent. Rollo just wants to see the full potential of the 5800 under a quiter environment and in the meantime replace the card in his son's computer. What is wrong with that? Some ppl like voodoo's others like 5800s. Personally, if i had the chance, i would also like to get my hands on the 5800U just to see what it can do under certain games (not benchmarks).

Agreed. You've GOT to be impressed with the engineering Abit put in that cooling, it's like they said,"What would make this card OC best, short of a water cooling system?" and then had at it.

Atlantean:
actually I hadn't really heard much about the fx5800
nVidia themselves tried to wipe it's memory from the Earth due to the anger generated by the FlowFX cooling system. Even at stock speeds the 5800NU performed between a 9700 and a 9700Pro, I don't know to this day why it generated any controversy.

I tried to join your army a few weeks back, but as usual in life, when you don't come to play, you lose. I bid $220 maximum on an EVGA 5800U and lost out. If this card turns out like I think it will, we should indeed be an "army of two". ;) Nice benches, BTW, I'll be using a A64 3000+ to push it, we'll see how close I come.

You're right to some extent, I shouldn't have been so disagreeable with the $1500 V5 6K clan. I did think it was somewhat different as that card is somewhat shy of what many would consider "usable" so in that case you're basically just buying it to look at it. You're right though, and I was wrong. My apologies to any offended by my opinion on the 6Ks "value".

Mloot:

Thanks dude.

Now, I think I'm going to saw most of the pcb off an unused card so I can bolt my Zalman fan parallel to the 5800 in front of it rather than above it. (when it arrives next week anyway)

You replaced a 9800 Pro with a 5800 Ultra?

Don't worry PorBleemo. I'll be replacing the 5800 with a nV40 or R420 this summer, and all will be right with the universe again. ;) Sorry to upset you.

Is it OK if my four year old uses the 5800 for a while? His Spiderman game requires good DX8 performance.

BTW- when I sell off my unused hobby crap I usually offer pretty good prices. I've got $200+ worth of snorkel crap I used for 5 minutes @ $75, and a GPS I paid $175 for and used twice for $100 in the For Sale forum. (in case any of you actually have use for stuff like this, my wife found'em cleaning out our basement for Goodwill donations)

I have the Hoover SX95-T, that generates 13psi suction power. I've been looking for that Oreck XL that can lift a bowling ball. ;)

Why did you want a 5800? Do you collect graphics cards or something? You are swapping a 9800pro in favor of a 5800, i don't see the logic, but the card does look kinda cool.

LOL- it's almost worth $200 just to see this many people this baffled. I had no idea getting an unusual vid card would be so troubling to the community.

Logic units are imploding across the 'net, Rollo. They must not have seen those memory heatsinks.

I understand why you would want an FX 5800 rollo. A few weeks ago I was looking around for an original Geforce DDR to play around with. I skipped that generation and went with a Radeon 32 MB DDR, which I hated.

Good deal, Rollo ! Its amazing to see guys slamming you for buying something truly interesting. In todays society, if it isnt the fastest, if it isnt the 'bling-bling' thing, kids don't really care. Enjoy your card, and think of the $$$'s a 3DFX V6000 is bringing on Ebay these days.

Also, if you'd like to adopt me, I'm a 35 Y.O. hardware geek, would not need any sort of food nor monetary needs, and enjoy a hardware hand-me-down much more than any regular Joe. I just picked up an Antec 830 case for free yesterday.

The sinks are key, Pete. I think WT is on to something with his "if it's not the fastest" comment, but there does seem to be a minor grass roots 5800 support movement forming. :)
