Woot, I got a job!

Hi everyone. I haven't been around here much (at all) lately.

Anyway, here's a little story that I felt like sharing, since I'm kind of excited about the whole thing. I'll try to keep it short 🙂

So, background: I graduated high school in 1999. I've been going to college mostly constantly since then, but not taking too many units at once as I've also been working to support myself, and there are only so many hours in the day.

Anyway, my job that I've had for the last 4 years was a "student position", meaning they got away with paying me $37k/year. Well, now I'm 25 and I'm *finally* graduating next month. My employer has the option of converting me to a "full-time" (that means that I get regular instead of student pay, as I already worked 40 hours a week) employee when I graduate (I would make about $55k/year).

Well, a couple weeks ago, I got this whole "we're not sure if we can convert you when you graduate, we don't know if we have the funding and.." politics/bs/general crap that basically said "Yeah, maybe you'll get the $55k job, or maybe you won't have a job at all".

Being that I was generally bored with my current job anyway, and the "we cant even tell you if you have job at the end of the year" thing was total crap, I started sending out resumes to jobs listed on craigslist.

Anyway, it's been maybe three weeks since I started a hunt for a new job. I agreed to take a job for $68k earlier today. I'm moving to San Francisco (which is a city I love, I specifically looked for a job there) in January, and making a ton more money than I make right now 🙂

Sweet! 🙂

not bad, but keep in mind it costs an arm, leg and testicle to live in SF. The high pay is partially deceptive, a lot will get eaten up by rent and everything else.

Congrats on the job, but speaking as someone whose lived in SF for 5 years, 68K wont get you very far 🙂

Well, I'm not planning on buying a house anytime soon, and I'll actually probably be living with roommates. Even if I pay $800-1000/mo for a room, it's only about $250-450/month more than I pay right now, and my salary's going up by a lot more than $450/mo.

I'd be living in a van..... down by the river 😉

its not just rent that is more expensive. I am glad you are going to a city you like but I personally don't think you got a raise at all when you consider the cost of living there.

Not to burst your bubble but I think you should take a look at this.

Also, does anyone know where I can go to get advice about job offers? I have one and its a bit on the low side so I need to quantify benefits and decide whether its worth it to join this company and take a significant pay cut when compared to my potential earning power.

Congrats. I certainly know the pain of "student" pay and benefits (you know, the non-existent ones), although I still have to be in school until May...

SF is a beautiful city. I'd hate driving up and down those inclines but I guess its what makes it appealing right?
