This is something that I've wanted to do for a while.

Next week I'm going to start gun training with a friend of mine who's a cop. All I gotta pay for is the ammo. Going to do gun safety, dummy ammo, the whole thing. Rifles and pistols.

*commence replies about how I'm not mentally stable enough to own a gun*

It's something everybody should know. Be safe. And obey the 4 rules.

With your steady photo hands you might be a pretty good shot.

Hehe...I was going to do this. You're a confounding individual, FBB but I wish you the best. Good *snorgle* to you ;)

I'm actually not bad at all when it comes to BB guns, airsoft, and paintball. Different beasts compared to real guns of course, but I've always been a good, steady shot. My main issue is that I have pretty severe astigmatism in my right eye, my aiming eye, and it causes me to see double. Sucks. This is why I use my left eye for photography but with a rifle it's not so easy.

What are the 4 rules?

So shoot left handed if you have to. Copied from a forum but this was what I was taught since I was a little boy.

ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
The only exception to this occurs when you have a firearm in your hands and you have personally unloaded it for checking. As soon as you put it down, Rule 1 applies again.

Rule 2
NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY
You may not wish to destroy it, but you must be clear in your mind that you are quite ready to if you let that muzzle cover the target. To allow a firearm to point at another human being is a deadly threat, and should always be treated as such.

Rule 3
KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
This we call the Golden Rule because its violation is responsible for about 80 percent of the firearms disasters we read about.

Rule 4
BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

My dad is right-eye-dominant and right-handed, but he shoots lefty because his right eye sucks. He's an ok shot, too.

There are plenty of right handed people who are left eye dominant as well. Just gotta adjust it for you.

Do not cradle and stroke the gun in your arms like a baby duck or panda or whatever.

I can see it now:

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is The Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee. And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them."

BAM BAM BAM!!!

*snorgle snorgle*

!!!

Principles are the same. The only difference is recoil and the fact that guns are, of course, lethal.

1. Always treat every gun as if it were loaded.
2. Never point a gun at anything you don't intend to shoot.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
4. Always be aware of your target and what is beyond your target.
