Ok, I'm excited. I'm finally getting to use this 15" LCD I picked up.

It's a Samsung 531TFT 15" rebadged with HP's stuff and "Rackmount Flat Panel Monitor/Keyboard". It was part of a rackmount monitor keyboard rig for controlling rackmount servers. I picked it up at a swapmeet for $75, but it was missing the power supply, vid cable, and stand/keyboard/drawer/whatever.

It has a bastard vid connector, and I spent weeks trying to figure out how to attach the thing to my ATI AIW 8500DV. Turns out, it is an analog connection, masquerading as a DFP 26 connection. Once I got that, I had decided to hack it with a HD15 connector. Then I found the EXACT CABLE at Orvac Electronics in SoCal for $2! They had a box full of 'em.

Next step was the power supply. The label states it needs 12vdc, 3 amps. I figured an old AT power supply would be ideal. When I hacked that in, the screen was all ripply and flickering. WTF? Turns out that without a draw on the 5v side, the 12v side actually puts out like 19v (!). I got it working, sort of, with an old hard drive plugged into it to get a 5v draw. Worked, but ugly. The search was on for a 12vdc 3-5 amp power supply. Never thought it would be that tough to find! New ones run $60 or so, and that wasn't acceptible to me. Haunted thrift stores, swap meets, and electronics shops. Finally found the perfect one at the Cypress College swap meet. It was an Igloo power supply for their portable refrigerators! 12vdc, 5amps! :D

Redid all the connections and added shielding to the power supply cable, and now I'm using the LCD on my desk! Sweet! I am actually considering giving my son my 17" Trinitron CRT. :D

Just wanted to share this, in case anybody else stumbled on something similar. Let you know you WILL find the parts and goodies you need. Just takes time...

good job! I love hacking together someone else's junk to make something that actually works.
