So my girlfriend bitched me out the other day for not having a real internet connection, since dialing out thru my cellphone means she can't call me.

Well anways I went and got one of those USB adapter thingies and crossed my fingers for open APs. I found one good one, but the signal strength was non existant....so i was forced to use my macgyver skills to fix this.

Yup that's a brocolli steamer and a lot of scotch tape and voila I'm online :D

yeah it went from constant 0 bars in windows (I could get ip, but the packet drop was huge) to 1 bar and what seems to be normal connection 90% of the time.

I'm impressed with your ingenuity.

Not so much with your WiFi stealing. Try not to download anything too incriminating.

You win on the hardware side of things, but I think I've got you beat on my response to my internet going down:

1) Extend a USB WiFi dongle out the balcony door to pick up a ~40% signal from a 108mbps "Bad Neighbour" WiFi setup
2) Pipe that through my SFF box into standard RJ45
3) Connect that to the switch
4) DMZ myself so I'm not double-NATted
5) Pick up VoIP phone and make a call to Cogeco to tell them my internet's f*cked

I wonder who the leech is?
