I've always had *really* bad experiences with putting PC's together, even though i love it. Either i'd put everything together and turn it on, and have odd beeps be thrown at me, or a black screen, or smoke come out the back of the case... You name it and i've done it.

Anyway, i just put together a new Athlon XP 1600+ comp, and on my first try, the computer booted and worked fine!
I only have one concern. The air comming out of the back of the case is pretty warm compared to my old PC (Athlon 800). Now i know that its a much higher Mhz rating, but i thought the XP's were supposed to run a bit cooler - just a bit. Could it be this new IBM 60gb 7200rpm HD thats making all this heat? Thats pretty much the only new component that i could think of to add this much heat (i doubt an audigy would do it).

I know that my CPU temp was about 39-40C when checked in the BIOS. Can't check what it is under load. And the case temp was around 28C. Is this good? Any ideas?
Otherwise, my new system seems to be running great. I just installed winXP and its awesome - nice and snappy (with 512 ram :p)

Your temps are fine, and it is not the IBM adding additional "heat".

Those temps are fine.

I suggest you download MBM if you want a good app to check temps in Windows.

If you don't have any problems when you build a computer, you don't learn anything from building it :)

Hehe no its actually 2 words - DOA and Cleric. DOA stands for something, but its impossible for anyone to guess ;)

I'm glad to hear those temps are good. Keep in mind they are idle temps though (from the bios). Its odd though, cause i could swear that the air comming from my PC smells a bit... 'burned'? I dunno, maybe its just all that new equipment burning in and stuff.

A few more questions, if you don't mind...
I purchased an Enermax whisper 350W PS(the one with 2 fans in it) to go along with my new Athlon. One small questions - that fan connector that comes out of the PS is supposed to be hooked up to the 'Power fan' on the motherboard, right?

Oh yeah, and lastly (not really a hardware question but...), why the hell does winXP take up so much RAM? I mean, i got *6* copies of this file named scvhost.exe running in the background, each taking up like 5mb or more of memory. What the heck is it?!
