yeah i can already tell that its gonna be a bitch to keep him clean n stuff... like i barely find time to do the laundry or clean my room :D
so should i wash it at all? or will it be cool if the cage is clean?

i put some vitamins in its water... dont have any citrus around...

Yeah... they make stink. Don't get the wood chip medium, get the (more expensive) recycled fiber medium. it's worth it in many ways, not the least of which is that your rodent won't get cancer from eating it.

Did you get a long hair or short hair (rare?) If long hair, as an adult it will get big and very bushy in the back. You will want to wash it/trim it. Also you'll want to trim its nails..

They like to poop in their food.

I made a little house for them, and although they don't like climbing like other rodents they might be inclined to sit on top of a house.

Also, its a VERY good idea to have two... of the same age... same sex too.

I have had four.. First one died of pneumonia after we didn't give it citrus. also it scratched itself raw. Second one died of unknown causes (four years). Other two we gave away. They're not terribly good with kids, depending on their disposition. Better than hamsters, although guinea pigs can bite. Keep them out of high traffic, high draft, high sunlight areas. They'll be pissed off if they're always being disturbed, rattled, etc.

They can FLY in the open field.

loved celery. DEVOURED green and red apples. ENGULFED carrots.

have fun!

Guinea pigs are cute. I was at Petland yesterday and they had the biggest one I have ever seen. It had to way 8 lbs and had this cool looking hairdo like it was a bad combover! :)

I don't think they like to do their business in their food, it is more a matter of where you place the food. The tendency is to place the food bowl in a corner and it so happens corners are where they like to do their business. Since I started putting their bowls in a spot along the middle of one of the walls I rarely find anything other than food or litter in the food bowl and what litter etc does get in there is from normal activity bouncing it in there.

Had them growing up..I recall feeding them carrots and any green vegi and dry dog food. They like to guzzle lots of water too.

It can take a while for it to get used to you, patience is the best thing. There is a lot of info on them in the links I provided in my previous post including some veggies that are good to give them on a daily basis etc. I would suggest that you and your girlfriend take turns hand feeding it a leaf of romaine lettuce daily.
