so for the last week or so i'd been contemplating the idea of getting either a guinea pig or hamster... and i just went out and impulse-bought a cute one today...

he's black and white with a big patch of brown across his face... i named him Gizmo :)

so its my first pet pretty much appart from family pets like dogs... is there anything particular i should know other than feed him and clean his cage regularly? any tips from guinea pig experts in here ? :D

peace

Guinea pigs are cool. Be sure to get a very sturdy water bottle, they like to really bang them around and they can knock most of them over. I've heard that it's good for them to put Tang in their water too, but I've never done that. All the ones we ever had liked carrots.

so nobody has any tips etc?

right now he's just chilling in a corner... he's still a lil skiddish sometimes so i figured i'd let him chill on his own for a bit to get used to his new surroundings...

They are a lot of fun. Have a look also at Guinea Lynx for almost any kind of info you could want. Also I built a cage for our 2 following the instructions at Cavy Cages. It is a great cage and much better than the pet store one the lady we got our 2 from gave us.

Hahah that's awesome, I used to have a Guinea pig named Gizmo too. We had a pair named Rocko and Snowflake.. which ended up having a crap load of babies. This was back in the day when i was a kid though.

Anyways, guinea pigs rock, especially when they go "WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET"

Oh yeah, forgot some tips.

Guinea pigs like roaming around. We used to let them roam around the house every once in a while, they'd chew stuff up and poop everywhere, but if you set things up right in like a old room no one uses then it'll be a lot of fun for them.

They like being held... but watch out cause they might poop on you.

Cleaning the cage is a bitch.. We used to line it with newspaper and put the wood chips on top, but with the paper it made it a little easier. Of course they eventually nibble on this paper if there's a lack of chips inside. Every once in a while take the cage out and shoot it with a hose, rinse it nice and good. Theres always poop clumps and stuff on the cage, kinda nasty.

We used to let them roam in the backyard too. They had their fun back there cause it was all you can eat grass, but we had to catch them at night which sometimes was a real chore. But you don't have to clean up any poop. We stopped owning guienea pigs when the last pair we had a few years ago got torn up by stray cats or something. RIP Guinea Pigs.

guinea pigs rock

be sure to give him citrus (oranges, tang in his water) or he'll go insane and die.

Reepreepreep! Mine loved to hear the refrigerator open, he thought we were always getting him some lettuce :D

He also loved eating the clover out in the yard.

My step mom used to breed these things.

They don't like heights. They like to be pet on the ass.
There are these yougurt drop treats for rodent type creatures. They looooove thoes.

Otherwise, I dunno, buy onna them books. Drink some beer, talk to it.
Play chess, I hear they like chess a lot.

haha nice thx for the feedback! :)

yeah i can already tell that its gonna be a bitch to keep him clean n stuff... like i barely find time to do the laundry or clean my room :D
so should i wash it at all? or will it be cool if the cage is clean?

i put some vitamins in its water... dont have any citrus around...

I had one once.

It died.

Weird thing was I was in Florida when it happened and I had a friend taking care of it while I was away.

I had a dream one night it died, I called the girl who was watching it and asked if it was OK, she said yes. Next day, it died.

I never though about this before, but I wonder if SHE WAS taking care of it. Maybe it DID die the night I dreamed it....
