WOOHOO! Wireless Ethernet...

Scarpozzi

Lifer
My boss gave me a brand new Cisco Wireless LAN adapter for my laptop. 😀 I brought this badboy home and tried it out. I can pick up 2 networks and get a pretty solid connection from my balcony. I'm going to have to see what I can get in my office, but this is pretty sweet. 😀

Turns out the signal is only strong on my deck though... I was able to pick up 2 networks...I tried one and the second one disappeared before I could try it. I may get a WAP just so I can float with my lappy around here... I just need to find an extremely cheap one. I already have switches in 4 rooms and about 6 computers on my network. 😛

I need something like that for the long hotel nights...

WiFi = greatness.

I can get a signal all the way out the middle of my backyard. And this is going through three walls a few hundred feet away. 😀

The admin probably saw your first connection and killed the network. It's crazy how many unsecured WAPs there are out there though.

I was going to get in on that crazy-cheap netgear wireless router deal at amazon saturday but decided it was too close to christmas to be buying myself stuff. Besides, I figure if I buy a wireless router, that'll make me want a new laptop even more 🙂

Yeah...if you get a wireless router, a laptop is about the only practical application I can think of. I mean, if you have multiple lappys and you don't know where you'll need to use them, it's handy. I just don't have that much of a reason to get one because I have too many desktop systems and servers in my apartment already. The only thing my laptop will do for me is have work-related software and administrative tools on it. Then I'll probably be using Citrix anyhow and it won't matter if I'm on my laptop or in my comfy desk chair. 🙂

yeah, those cisco cards are sweet, high wattage and long range! 😀

I've got my pocketpc I could go wireless with too, but surfing with it isn't as nice as a laptop. I'd love to be able to sit out on the balcony and get some work done 🙂

Is this Cisco WiFi card better than the Orinoco Gold?

If so, how?

I have a Cisco 350 pcmcia adapter as well. While a good adapter with excellent client utilities, the range is somewhat lacking. Their is a connector for an external antenna, but that is separate. The best bang for the buck I can find out there is a Linksys Wusb11. The external antenna is wonderful, and the USB feature allows for easy transfer between desktop and laptop when needed.

Ok here is another......use the wireless router and a wireless bridge to connect your X-Box to your network and X-Box live. That way you don't have 50 feet of Cat5 strung around the house like I do.... 🙂

I'm pretty happy with my Dell Truemobile 1150 (rebadged Orinoco Gold). Just wanted to make sure that there wasn't a better WiFi card out there.
