I received 3 calls tonight from telemarketers, which is 3 more than I get on avg since I moved in here 2 months ago.

So I went to the NY do-not-call registry online and badaboom:

New York No Call

Your registration has been received - Your number will be added to the New York

State Do Not Call Registry which will be issued April 1, 2003 and become

effective on May 1, 2003 upon verification of your information. Complaints

regarding improper telemarketing calls made on or after May 1, 2003

should be reported to the New York State Consumer Protection Board via the

Internet at www.consumer.state.ny.us, via telephone at 1-800-697-1220 or via

U.S. mail to the New York State Consumer Protection Board, 5 Empire State

Plaza, Suite 2101, Albany, New York 12223, Attention: "Do Not Call Complaints."

SAWWEEEET. I had done this for my dad when I lived with my parents and it seemed to have worked in eliminating calls altogether. Thanks George Pataki!

Does the NY do not call list only work for companies inside of NY or all companies across the nation?

From the FAQ:
Q: Are telemarketers calling from outside of New York State affected by this law ?
A: Yes. Once your number has been included on the Registry, no telemarketer may call you, regardless of the call's geographic origin (unless the telemarketer is covered by an exception provided for in the law).

Excellent, I will be adding my name to that list in about 3 months when I move back to NY. :)
