Woohoo - My car insurance went down by 25%!

What a pleasant surprise - I looked at my online car insurance renewal policy and my 6-month premium dropped from $833 to $619! My locality (Pierce Cty, Washington) has very high insurance rates, and I have had 3 tickets and about $25,000 in comprehensive claims in the last 4 years (my car was vandalized, then stolen), so I had pretty well resigned myself to paying through the nose. Fortunately USAA is honest enough to continually lower my rates as my tickets get more distant in time. They also send refund as much of your premium as they can per year and put it into a subscriber savings account, which is nice. What a great company!

USAA is the one for military officers right?

Yes. They are amazing. When my old car (a 1-year-old Integra GS-R sedan with about 13K miles) was stolen and stripped, they paid me $200 less than I paid for the car, brand-new!

Cool. My step-dad is a retired captain and I can get issurance from them due to that. Have been putting it off for a bit though. Will probably wait till after I turn 25 in May to do it.

I would definitely recommend them. Their rates are always competitive, and their service on claims is unparalleled.

Not necessarily. It depends on the state. I have my car and renters insurance with them. I also have a credit card and I'm getting ready to open a mutual fund with them. I think they are a very good company. Call them and ask them if you are eligible for membership. The worst thing that can happen is that they say no.

Yeah, I believe USAA is now available to all military members or retired members. It was at one time exclusively for commissioned officers, then they opened it up to NCOs, and now I think even junior enlisted members can use it.

My step-dad already called them and his rep said I can get coverage.

I'm just waiting till I turn 25 in May before I do it. I know that auto insurance typically goes down after you turn 25 so I figure taking care of it then will be the easiest. Otherwise I might have to redo insurance again in May. As its not that far off I can deal with it.

I'm hoping my insurance premiums will nosedive shortly too. I turn 25 in 2 weeks, and then three weeks after that I get married 🙂

Damn those two combined should take a nice chunk out of your insurance premiums.

Who's Eligible
Active duty, National Guard and Reserve enlisted personnel, officers and officer candidates, and their families are eligible for membership in USAA.

This is who their web site says is eligible however anyone who is interested should call them because it is my understanding that some states do not allow insurance companies to limit their membership in this manner. I'm pretty sure they will insure you if you have ever been in the military. The service and rates are good enough that it's worth a phone call, IMO.

USAA is pretty awesome! They gave me $3500 more for my SVT Contour than it's worth when it got totalled a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks, I think I'll call them tomorrow and see if I qualify although I'm a civilian.
