Local police auction, stores didn't want the merchandise back.

New in box: ThinkPad X61 Tablet 7764, Vista Ultimate, etc.

$110

Woohooooooooo!
And, I have been browsing the FS/T forums for the last few days, because my wife needs a laptop for her nursing courses.

Bidding was fun. It wasn't run by an auctioneer, so he just let people shout out bids. The bidding between the other two people went like this:
"5 dollars" "6 dollars!!!" Irritated look that someone merely outbid him by $1, "10 dollars" "11 dollars!" with a super-excited look on her face. It went like this up to $75, with longer and longer pauses between bids. When the guy had a grin on his face, convinced the lady wasn't going to bid $76, he heard me in the back just mutter, "hunderd." Looks of shock crossed the faces of the people in the crowd - all clueless what the thing was worth, because it was a smaller laptop than the HP Pavilion I had just won for $160 (also new in box.) The guy very hesitatingly said "105", I quickly shot back with 110, the psychology worked, I won. :D

The HP Pavilion is one of those pre-packaged things for Walmart or wherever. $9hundred-something on the side of the box. It's probably been in police custody for up to a year, but it was still new in box.

My wife is setting up the thinkpad right now. Everything was there, everything works just fine. Of course, it's sold "as-is", so we don't get whatever the initial warranty would have been (at least, I don't think we get the warranty.)

There's nothing quite like getting a REALLY good deal. Isn't that ThinkPad something like $2000? for you!

Yes, that seems to be the going price. I expected it to be a model that was worth maybe $1000. I was really surprised when I started looking at prices when I got home. I'm still kicking myself for not checking on prices while I was at the auction. I just sized everyone up & knew I'd easily be able to get it for a fraction of its value. In retrospect, I could have purchased the 3rd one, another thinkpad, but with "lower" feature, i.e. XP instead of Vista Ultimate. My wife elbowed me and said something about stuff we still needed to purchase for the kitchen, and I just had it in the back of my mind not to spend too much.

How'd you find an auction like that?

The city I used to live in has an auction every year. Most cities do. They sell the city's surplus goods, things from the police department, such as recovered bikes that haven't been claimed in a year, etc. Last year I picked up a really nice solid oak workbench. My wife uses it as a table in the laundry room. Every year that I've gone, I've gotten some incredibly good bargains, except the year that they had an entertainment center with a giant big screen TV, etc. The newspaper ran a big front page story about the television that they were going to sell (confiscated after a drug raid) and people came out of the woodwork just to purchase that television. That resulted in a ton of bidding for the television, and higher prices for everything else.

heh, last year, I purchased a giant, heavy, aluminum tire thing. Drove straight to the scrapyard with it & profited by several hundred percent above the 50 cents I paid. (Just for shits and giggles)

Wal-mart quality bikes, in decent condition, were selling for about $5 to $15 today. That's typical at city auctions.

Wow that's freaking amazing, congrats.

Last time I checked, the warranties on lenovo/ibm laptops travels *with the machine*. So as long as the original warranty hasn't expired, you're still covered. There may also be ways to pay $$ and extend the warranty; I'm not sure about that one.
