I usually go like 6 or 8 months between formatting my drive and I can always tell some difference. Not as much as I like but its enough to warrant the trouble. My two pesos.

I've just had to format because Windows transmorphed intself into the spawn of Satan again. I usually notice a bit of a performance increase, but more importantly I always see large stability gains after a format. The fewer blue screen's o' death I'm privy to the better.
