Woohoo, instant messaging on Unix console

A few months ago I tried to get a Jabber client for my Unix server. No luck... problems with missing libraries, errors, etc. I thought my FreeBSD machine was just not created for "fun" stuff like Instant Messaging and I should just stick to doing what I've been doing with it for years -- using it as a webserver.
Well, my regular workstation is broken and my dad kicked me off of his computer because he wanted to go to bed, so I come to the server in hopes of maybe browsing the web using 'links', the console browser.
On a hunch, I search for "ncurses AIM client", and lo and behold, I immediately find one. I download it, and it runs perfectly!!! I decide to ride my luck (if that's even an expression) and go to www.jabbercentral.com hoping that they have some CLI clients I can use... and hey, I find one!! I had to install a XML program to get it to work, but that was minor details.
To sum it up, my Unix server is currently running two instant messaging programs in separate virtual sessions... all with no hint of any graphics. This is way cool. An added bonus is that now I can chat at school... it's illegal to run an IM client, but it's not illegal for me to telnet into my server since no one knows what that "Tilnet" program is for anyway. Anyway, I am just thrilled... yes, I have no life. 😛
