WooHoo! I just found out that FIOS is available in my area!

I was talking to my friend who works at Verizon yesterday, and he told me it was in our area but I didn't realize that. SO I check online now and it is available!

I currently pay $50/mo for 8/1 ... so paying $45/mo for 15/2 only makes sense 😛

Too bad I have to wait till mid-january for the installation though 🙁

I presume that FIOS did not require a phone line since it comes through on a fiber. It would suck if they force you to take a land line with it.

They hook some type of box up outside your house, and they run a CAT5 cable from the box to a wireless router they support you with. However, from what I've been told, you can use any router, they just initially hook it up to their router they provide you with.

I just ordered it, I have to wait until January 13th for installation, but it's definitely going to be worth it 🙂

From what it seems, its like a broadband DSL connection.

Also, since we currently have Verizon land phone lines as well, they hook our phone lines into this new box on the side of our house as well. So yea, a land line is definitely not needed

i would love to drop by dsl line. it requires a land line, so the total is about $50/month. might as well go fios if it doesn't require a land line heh

I think that the pricing is $5 cheaper with a land line (plus land line costs still) but you don't need the land line.

Dammit... I just upgraded to the "Premium" Comcast package, and the d/l seems a little faster, but no improvement on the upload... How am I supposed to remote home from work to bypass their firewalls with a crappy UL like that? 😀

Hey you live in Silver Springs, very nice area.

My GF is by Gaithersberg.

Can't wait to get it in my area.

yah its a nice area. i want to get out of it though, too expensive. i'm still living at home and saving to buy a place, but i may move out of this area completely. the damn cold weather in the winter sucks.

coincidentally, last night, i dreamt i saw a fios installer working at the pole in my backyard meaning it was almost available. i'm such a dork. but wait... I go out there and it turns out it's an old lady who came into our yard to do something with flowers. I get so many WTF dreams. :|

FIOS is essentially fiber to your house, replacing the "land line", which is copper. The box they hookup in your house provides both data and voice, which go out on the same fiber. Same thing they've been doing for years with business data/voice connections, but slightly different in how and the pricing.

Darn it, I am stuck here with DSL for $40 with 1.5MB down. Damn you BellSouth.

P.S. Cox cable is not any cheaper or faster.

Funny how our perception changes over time. I remember when they just started rolling DSL out in my area, I would have given my left nut AND $50 a month for 384 kbps down, which is where I started with DSL. Now my 2.5 Mb down just isn't enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
