Too bad Verizon isn't going to lay fiber in my area. That is a definate blow. I guess they think we don't need that kind of bandwidth.

FTTH is not going to happen everywhere, despite the hype that telcos try to spread
copper/cable is going to be the access technology for the majority of people for years to come.

Its no secret that landlines have been declining in popularity due to cell phones. I wonder who will be benefiting from this new law. ;)

no, there is Local Loop Unbundling and you can get DSL without voice (but not yet VDSL for the moment)
