WooHoo, I get my Windows Vista Beta Customer Preview Program in two days

Been looking to get a copy of this for ages. 😀

Just wondered if people would like to give their views on the latest build so far. My main query is whether it has many bugs or not?

Also I have an Athlon 64, would you recommend using 32bit or 64bit? Basically is there much to gain from using the 64bit build? I know the driver support is slim for x64 support but would like to give it a try anyway. If the driver support is that bad then i'll stick with the 32bit version.

Being as it is still based on NTFS, i would assume it is quite stable, no?

Before installing, consider enrolling in an anger management course.

!

I had it installed for about 2 days and then I threw the disk in the trash. I was trying sooo hard to manage with all the problems, and then IE just b0rked, and it was bye-bye vista. I'm not toutching another beta copy. Just waiting until the real thing comes out.

EDIT:

Being as it is still based on NTFS, i would assume it is quite stable, no?

As far as beta's go, they're fine. I've had both 32 & 64 bit versions up and running since the day they came out and use both daily with no problems. On this system I'm actually running XP Pro, X64 XP, 32 & 64 bit Vista and Ubuntu and except for having to edit Grub, I've had no problems whatsoever. All the games I use run fine in both Vista's.

The only drawback I've found is one system with a Via chipset was "quirky" as Via does not have Vista drivers ready. Other than that, my nForce 4 boards run with no problems and with tweaking I find even this early beta very stable. More programs are popping up almost daily that work with Vista and more "tweaks" are being found likewise....YMMV though so don't just figure you're going to be able to use it as your main O/S until you see how it runs on your system............keep your XP/Linux system cocked and ready!😉

I downloaded the beta when it was released to the public and tried installing both the x86 and x64 versions. I started with the x64 version. It took at least 3 attempts before it completely installed. Even then, it was incredibly unstable on my system for whatever reason. Once I did get it working, none of the nvidia drivers worked. I couldn't install drivers for my Nforce3 board or my Ti4200 graphics card. What was weird was the forceware graphics driver said it could not find a compatible graphics card in my system, so I was stuck at 800x600, which looked like crap. I knew my gpu wasn't able to handle aero glass, but that was a perfectly fine sacrifice on my end. Since I couldn't get a graphics driver installed, I decided to give the x86 version a try to no avail, so I just went back to XP pro and will stay here until the final release of Vista. I still plan on buying it since I have contacts at MS, which cuts down on the cost.

Hopefully your attempt goes smoother than mine! 🙂

P.S. For those that are curious, the system I attempted to install Vista on is: Athlon 64 3000+, MSI NForce3, 1.5GB RAM, Ti4200
