I've been looking at cars recently, since I've gotten really sick of waiting for the bus and wasting so much time getting to work and back since the Shadow departed. Yesterday I looked at 3 cars.
The first one was a Chevy Cavalier '94 5spd, selling for $1900 CDN ($1400 USD), which was a bright red and looked pretty good on the outside and seemed to run okay. I was ready to buy it, but decided to get it inspected first. That was a good idea because as it turns out the car needed $2500 CDN in repairs. Ignition, brakes, wheel bearings, shocks, worn clutch, leaking headgasket and rotted radiator were among the problems detected. I had enough head gasket hell with the Shadow so I decided not to get it.
The second car was a Subaru Legacy '91 5spd, also selling for $1900 CDN and which also ran okay, but obviously needed brake work and exhaust work, and had a cracked windshield. It was a pretty peppy car, much peppier than the Cavalier, and surprisingly torquey for a 4 cylinder. I might have gone for that but the soonest I could get it inspected was Wednesday, and the car needed some work as it is anyways.
The last car that I saw, just as an afterthought and just for fun, was a Toyota Corolla '86 5-spd selling for $450 CDN or $330 USD. I was expecting a total rust bucket but it seemed to be in much better mechanical condition than the Shadow I owned last. The body wasn't rusted but it was a bit beat up, the bumpers were loose and the spoiler was ripped off, cracked windshield too but it seemed to run pretty good and I figure hey, for $450 who cares if it dies in a couple months? It has 220000km on it, yet a friend of mine had the same model with over 400000km and his still ran good, from what I've heard these cars are indestructible.
So oh well, we'll see how it goes.. I'm just happy I'm finally gonna have transportation again.. although I'm a little jealous of my friend that's getting a nice Camaro V8 from the same year or close to it... but he also will be paying 10x more if he goes through with it 😉
