Variable speed is nicer on hard woods and when using some bits. Before I got my variable speed router, my 1/4" straight bits would burn up after several uses. I find my bits last much longer and I don't get any burning with slower speeds.
I would highly recommend variable speed, make sure you read in the manual what speeds you should use on certain cuts and woods.
