I just inherited an old teak dinning table & 6 chairs (leather seats/backrests, not in mint condition but it have no holes or cracks) that in need of a refinish job. Currently it has a clear natural varnish that is worn down to the wood on part of the surface, and I?m thinking of giving it a red base stain with a dark chocolate/coffee brown/red lacquer finish.

Should I sand it down & refinish it with a clear/honey colour, or I should go for the lacquer looks?

Personally, I'm partial to natural, especially for older, all solid, real wood stuff.

Have you looked at Danish Oil as a finish? It's generally much easier than lacquer and is a pretty easy finish to maintain, and is pretty durable. It comes in a failrly wide variety of colors ... and if you decide you don't like it, you can still apply other finishes over it (not sure about lacquer though) or remove it.

Good Luck

I'll give it a consideration since I still have 3/4 gallon of tung oil.
