Woodworkers/CAD Designers

Any such thing exist? I used to use AutoCAD and DATACAD back in highschool, the oldschool DOS versions, and they were alright for basic stuff. I want to design some furniture though, and be able to rotate it 3D style, and toss boards on without having to draw them all out by hand.

Ideas?

That might work, although I didn't really want this in Software, since I don't know how many programmers are into woodworking 😛

I'm trying to design a desk with an electrical channel down the back, a tower enclosure with a built-in exhaust fan, all customized and whatnot. I'm horribly bored.

so i know autocad, architectural desktops and solidworks.

Well, this desk is going to have hinges, doors, some sort of wheels (maybe), and a hutch that clips on the sides and back so to be removeable.

Would solidworks work for that, and allow me to print out a final design with all of the needed diameters, maybe a total amount of various materials needed, and so on?

Have been using DataCAD for years, more architectural based, but I have done some of my furniture design in there as well. DataCAD 12 is due next year and will have much improved 3D modeling ability. If you are in no rush, wait for that, only about $250 (I think!), good balance of power and cost.

I remember back in the day, building a computer for our drafting teacher so he could use Datacad 7 or something like that. Thing had a whole 512MB of memory, a 400mhz processor, and W95 on it. Absolutely cruised through stuff his other computers (all donated) would just choke on.

I designed a whole motel once, two floors, complete with furniture, and a deck/pool, with individual nails (I was bored that semester). Huge file, I think it topped out over a GB or so, took forever to render.

I built 12 computers for the drafting lab at school, sounds like about the same specs, We were running DataCAD 8, they were the best systems in the school.

I have been doing a lot of houses, but a hotel sounds like fun...just what I need something to occupy the rest of the time that I don't have! But it will be nice when I have my new workstation in less than 30days!
